We had the pleasure of attending Antwerp Maritime Week, co-organized by Plug and Play Maritime, The Beacon | Innovation Community , MCA (Maritime Campus Antwerp), Blauwe Cluster (Blue Cluster) vzw., and MASS Think Tank Belgium. The event was a fantastic opportunity to dive deep into the future of maritime innovation.

🚢 Port of the Future by Erwin Verstraelen, VP Innovation at Port of Antwerp-Bruges

Erwin emphasized that innovation is a continuous process requiring a culture of experimentation and acceptance of failure. With the rapid growth of technology, he encouraged retrying failed attempts within 12-24 months as new solutions emerge and opportunities arise.

🔒 The Human Aspect of Security by Ana Isabel Barros, Principal Scientist at TNO

Ana's charismatic presentation highlighted how ports have always been hotspots for smuggling, with criminal groups being early adopters of new technologies. She showcased a holistic view of the ongoing cat-and-mouse game between governments and criminal organizations, emphasizing the alignment of criminal business models with classic economic models.

🛡️ Safety & Security in Port Area by Yves Stevens from PSA Belgium

Yves stressed that security and safety start with human mindset and culture within an organization. Technology is secondary; the human factor remains the weakest link in ensuring security.

The Beacon | Innovation Community once again demonstrated its strong culture of collaboration and networking, creating an environment full of good vibes and valuable interactions.

Plug and Play Maritime organized a perfectly executed event focusing on decarbonization, a complex and costly process that needs sustainable business model adaptations. We were inspired by the great pitches from startups driving this change.
